In a triumphant return to the waters, Mexico recently hosted an exciting rafting competition in mid-December 2023. The event saw the participation of 8 teams in the men's category and 3 in the women's category.

Following WRF guidelines set to better define the standards of river guiding worldwide, a new and comprehensive Training Programme has been launched for river guides and coaches in collaboration with National Federations.

This initiative transcends borders, welcoming participation from River Guides and federations worldwide. Collaborations with river associations, environmental organizations, and tourism boards ensure a diverse and inclusive approach to training.

The launch of this training program signals a commitment to the continual professional development of River Guides, enhancing their capabilities and ensuring a higher standard of service for adventure seekers globally. By investing in the education and empowerment of River Guides, the initiative aims to create a network of knowledgeable and responsible professionals who contribute to the sustainable growth of the sport of rafting. 

Recognizing the crucial role that River Guides play in ensuring the safety and enjoyment of adventurers, the launch of this program comes as a response to the growing need for standardized, high-quality training. The WRF National Training Programme will be managed in three distinct ways: 

A National Federation (“NF”), recognised by WRF, retains the autonomy to manage the national programme if the following conditions are met: 

If the above-mentioned conditions are not met, a National Federation, recognized by WRF, has the authority to grant permission to WRF Instructors to operate within the Country on its behalf.  

Permission is granted automatically without formalities.

The WRF Instructors are just required to notify the National Federation and WRF Secretariat of their intent to organize a course/exam through the designated form. The National Federation can oppose the organization of the course/exam, informing the WRF Instructor and the WRF secretariat. The National Federation should promote the calendar of courses and exams at national level.

Under the umbrella of the NF, the WRF Instructors can run course and exam according to the specific regulations. Upon exam/course completion, the National Federation is responsible for validating the certifications issued by the Instructors (according to the indications referred to point 5 of this document). 

In countries where a WRF Member does not exist, WRF Instructors are empowered to run courses and exams. WRF Instructors are required to notify the WRF of their intent to organize a course/exam through the designated form (Annex A). 

The WRF Instructors can run course and exam according to WRF Rules. A comprehensive final report (using the specific template) for each course/exam conducted must be submitted to WRF Secretariat. 

At the conclusion of the course, the WRF Secretariat will validate the certifications granted by the Instructors.

The picturesque Kresna Gorge in Bulgaria has long been a site of ecological importance and a hub for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly the rafting community. However, a recent proposal to build a highway through this pristine natural landscape has raised concerns from environmentalists and the rafting community.

Protecting a Biodiverse Oasis

Kresna Gorge is a biodiversity hotspot, home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. The proposed highway construction could lead to habitat fragmentation and loss, potentially endangering several species. Environmentalists argue that it may disrupt migration routes, harm local populations, and damage the overall ecological balance in the region. The pristine natural environment of Kresna Gorge is a precious asset, and many argue that its conservation should take precedence over development.

The site is situated along the riverbanks of the Struma River in Southeast Bulgaria and passes between the Pirin and Malashevska Mountains. The unique site provides a home for an extraordinarily high number of rare and endemic species protected according to the EU “Habitats” Directive, including 4 types of habitats, 23 types of birds, 17 species of bats, and 31 species of reptiles and amphibians. 

This is the most important place for the breeding, migration and hibernation of a great number of species. The River Struma is also a very important corridor for the seasonal and the long-term migrations of plants, insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds, bats and mammals in the South – North direction. This migration, however, is concentrated in the lower reaches of the gorge nearby the river. Thus, the location of the current road there is often fatal for them. Thousands of insects, birds and bats crash into the trucks barreling down the road every day. Road traffic also kills those animals that live permanently in the gorge and periodically move upwards the slopes: tortoises, snakes, lizards, frogs, voles, dormouses, hedgehogs, etc. The nesting birds and the bats in the region, with their colonies extremely close to the road, are also threatened. The stone-martens, foxes and otters also faced grave peril as they feed on the killed animals during the night. If a motorway is constructed through the gorge that will increase the animal slaughter many times causing nearly a 100% death rate of the non-flying animals in the valley.

Rafting through the picturesque gorges and pristine rivers is not only a source of revenue but also a way to connect with nature and promote a sustainable outdoor lifestyle. The federation advocates for responsible development that maintains the ecological integrity of the region.

Get ready for a thrilling year of rafting competition as 2024 unfolds with a series of prestigious Continental Championships across the globe. From the heart of Asia in March to the shores of South America in late October, this year promises a sporting spectacle like never before.

The journey begins in March as Asia takes the spotlight, hosting its own Continental Championships. From March 3-9 - Shaukat Sikand - President of the Indian Rafting Foundation invite us all to join us for the 2024 Asian Rafting Championships in Himachal Pradesh, India an enchanting realm nestled amidst the majestic Himalayas.

Asia, the birthplace of various cultures and histories, is ready to demonstrate not just its athletic excellence but also the unity that accompanies continental competitions. Countries will unite to compete for fame and make their mark in the records of sports history.

As the warmth of spring transitions into the vibrant days of summer, the focus shifts to Europe (TBD) and Africa (May 13-17). These continents will host their own championships, inviting the top teams to compete on the big stage. 

The grand finale unfolds in the colorful landscapes of South America (October 30-31, November 1-2-3). As the leaves fall on one hemisphere, the intensity of the rapids rises in the other. Chile, known for its passionate embrace of adventure sports, will host a rafting spectacle like no other. As we welcome the new year, it's time for reflection! 2023 finally marked the return to sporting normality after years impacted by the Covid pandemic. Unfortunately, our world remains in turmoil with ongoing economic, social crises, and persistent wars, making it challenging to foster dialogue and sports. Yet, we persist in organizing and participating in sports, hoping to contribute, albeit modestly, to the cause of peace.

I'm here to share the remarkable events of this year, filled with satisfaction for all of us. From a sporting perspective, alongside various national and international championships, our senior World Championship stood out as the highlight of the year!

The event, hosted in the stunning Valtellina valley in the Alps near Milan, on the Swiss border, was a tremendous success. We extend immense gratitude to Mr. Benedetto Del Zoppo, the Italian President, and his rafting company for the impeccable organization. The event received substantial public and media attention, and the weather favored us greatly!

However, the true measure of success lies in the participation: 32 nations, with over 90 teams competing. In the annals of rafting history, these numbers are unprecedented. Notably, the youth component in these teams is significant. Countries like Japan, Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Italy showcased exceptional performances, amid a rising competitive standard. The margin between podium contenders and others is narrowing, emphasizing the sport's increasing competitiveness.

Africa's presence with teams from Morocco, and delegations from Uganda and Senegal, underscores our movement's global representation. Major sporting institutions have recognized and admired the high level attained by our events. I'd like to acknowledge the Czech Republic, a pivotal nation in the river world, whose expertise has contributed significantly to our progress.

This recognition is well-deserved by the WRF team for their unwavering dedication and passion to the rafting movement. While there's room for improvement and corrections, our enthusiasm and status as a continuously evolving laboratory keep us optimistic. Recent board decisions have embraced numerous alterations and enhancements, always considering the feedback from our base.

Gratitude extends to our volunteers, young media handlers, judges led by Stefan Purjakov, and Massimo Desiati, who leads the sports movement with remarkable competence and passion. Kudos to the coaches for sharing their knowledge, all the athletes, disabled participants who bring immense sporting satisfaction, and everyone contributing to spreading joy.

On the training front, significant innovations have been greenlit concerning workshop conduct and methods. Alex Aitken joining the coordination managed by Alejandro Buzzo has formed a group of approximately 30 experienced instructors, all eager to contribute their river expertise. In the upcoming developments, crucial information and a dedicated team will spearhead the execution of River Guide workshops, courses, and exams worldwide, adhering to WRF regulations and in collaboration with the National Federations. This initiative aims to provide many individuals with the opportunity to benefit from the WRF Training Programme associated advantages.

In a heartwarming display of sharing and environmental awareness, athletes from around the world came together during a recent WRF World Rafting Championships 2023 Valtellina, Italy to support the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and contribute towards the adoption of a panda. Participating in the WRF athletes' lottery their collective efforts resulted in the adoption of a charming panda named Adda - like the marvelous river where the event took place that hosted the 400 athletes during the WRC week.

The World Champs, renowned for its global participation - served as an ideal platform to raise awareness about the pressing need for conservation. Recognizing this unique opportunity the World Rafting Federation collaborated with WWF to encourage athletes and spectators to make voluntary donations towards wildlife conservation initiatives. Recognizing the power of their influence, many athletes willingly contributed towards the adoption of a WWF panda.

The athletes' contributions have made a tangible difference in the conservation efforts of the WWF, reinforcing the belief that every individual, regardless of their background, has the potential to contribute towards safeguarding our environment. We hope that the adoption of Adda will continue to inspire future generations and serve as a reminder of the importance of nurturing a harmonious relationship between humans and wildlife.

In an exciting development for adrenaline enthusiasts and water sports aficionados, Pucon - Chile, has been chosen as the vibrant host city for the upcoming PanAmerican Rafting Championships in 2024. This announcement heralds the convergence of top-tier athletes and the breathtaking natural beauty of the region, promising an exhilarating event that will leave a lasting impression on participants and spectators alike. The president of the Chilean Rafting Federation, Cristian Huenchuleo, announce that the international event is scheduled for the end of October and beginning of November 2024:

''Through this, we confirm that the PanAmerican Rafting Championships in 2024 will be held in Chile - Pucón on the Trancura River (October 30-31, November 1-2-3), organized under the umbrella of the World Rafting Federation ( WRF).''

With this the countdown began for the Chilean Rafting Federation, to begin with the not simple organization that involves bringing about 40 teams from 20 countries that will face each other in the river to win the title of PanAmerican Champions.

''The PanAmerican Championships holds immense importance in our calendar, marking a significant milestone for us. The activity will give an early start to the 2025 summer season. And this, obviously, will bring a potential increase in economic income on dates that are, generally, complex and with low attendance of tourists and visitors. There is a fairly large number of people who could come for the event, including participants, competitors, leaders, attendees, family members, etc.

There are a lot of people who also adds that there will be an important media factor, since there will be a lot of expectations on the part of the media to cover the event in the area: ''When you mention Pucón anywhere in the world, it is known that we have spectacular rivers and the conditions for an event of these characteristics and brands are enthusiastic''. According to Huenchuleo, holding the event in Pucón is to further position the place as the center of activity, adventure tourism and sports - Pucón is not only touristic, but also sports. In essence, Pucón isn't just an adventure; it's an immersive journey that seamlessly combines the thrill of exploration with the tranquility of nature, leaving an indelible mark on all who venture into its captivating embrace; the community will benefit from this event.

Asian Rafting Championships on the go! A thrilling new adventure will bring together all the rafting lovers from across the continent to race for the title of Asian Champion celebrating the spirit of river sports.

The competition will be organized by the Indian Rafting Foundation and held from September 16th to 23rd on the river Satluj in Shimla District; Himachal Pradesh - India. With breathtaking landscapes and challenging III-IV level rapids the Sutlej is one of only three Trans Himalayan rivers originating in the high Tibetan Plateau that cuts across the mighty Himalayan ranges, its source lies in near the Mansarovar Lake at 18500 ft. .

The arrival is scheduled for september 16th - all the teams will be welcomed at the New Delhi airport and transported to Shimla. From september 19th to 22nd the teams will compete against one another in accordance with the WRF Sport Rules in the three disciplines: Downriver, Slalom and RX. Each discipline tests different aspects of the teams' abilities, requiring them to navigate treacherous rapids, maneuver through obstacles, and synchronize their movements to achieve maximum speed and control.

‘’I’m optimistic that the teams coming from various part of Asia will enjoy the scenic location chosen for the Asian Rafting Championships’’ says the Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu ‘’This Championships will give a big boost to adventure sports and make Himachal Pradesh a preferred destination for both national and worldwide enthusiasts’’ and also aligning with the most recent projects ‘’Himachal Pradesh is a very eco sensitive state and I congratulate that the organizer for endeavoring to make it a PLASTIC FREE event.’’.

In addition to the continental event at Nadaun (Himachal Pradesh) will also take place the ‘’All India Rafting Marathon Series’’ open to all the teams from september 24th to 28th.
